Best Dog Walking Spots Around Steyning and Surrounds 🐾

By Downward Dogz — your local dog walker in West Sussex

Every Walk is a New Journey!

If you’re lucky enough to live in or around Steyning or Findon, you’ll know how spoiled we are for beautiful countryside. From rolling hills to peaceful woodland trails, there’s no shortage of dog friendly walks where tails can wag freely and noses can explore.

As a local dog walker in West Sussex, I spend my days discovering (and re-discovering!) the very best routes to keep both pups and people happy. Here are a few of my favourite South Downs dog walks that are perfect for adventure, enrichment, and connection.

🌿 1. Cissbury Ring, Findon

A local classic — and for good reason! Cissbury Ring offers sweeping views over the South Downs and plenty of space for dogs to roam and sniff to their heart’s content. The circular path is wide and grassy, great for sociable group walks or confident off-lead dogs.

Parking: There’s a small car park off Nepcote Lane in Findon. It can get busy on weekends, so early mornings are best.
Top Tip: Bring water and a lead — livestock often graze the hill, and it can get windy at the top.

🌸 2. Chanctonbury Ring, near SteyningA slightly more mysterious trail (some say haunted by legends of ancient kings!), Chanctonbury Ring is a peaceful and rewarding climb through beech woodland to a stunning hilltop circle. Dogs love the mix of scents, trees, and open grassland.

Parking: Free parking is available near Washington Bostal or at the bottom of the trail from the A283.
Enrichment Idea: Hide a few treats along the path or play a quick “find it” game under the trees — a great way to engage your dog’s natural instincts while enjoying the view.

🐾 3. The South Downs Way — Steyning to Upper Beeding

If your dog enjoys a good stretch of the legs, this scenic section of the South Downs Way is perfect. You’ll pass open meadows, chalky tracks, and panoramic views over the Adur Valley. It’s ideal for steady walkers or high-energy pups who love to explore.

Parking: Try the Steyning Bypass lay-by or Upper Beeding village.
Safety Note: Keep dogs close when crossing any roads or approaching livestock. Paths can be uneven, so sturdy footwear helps too!

🐕 4. Wiston Estate & Annington Hill

For a quieter walk away from crowds, Wiston Estate offers gentle rolling hills, shaded paths, and birdsong for company. It’s one of my favourite spots for a calm, mindful stroll — perfect for older dogs or those who prefer a slower pace.

Parking: Small lay-bys near Wiston House or Steyning Grammar field entrances.
Enrichment Tip: Let your dog take the lead for part of the walk — allowing them to choose the route boosts confidence and mental stimulation.

💛 5. Findon Gallops

Flat, open, and easy to access, Findon Gallops is fantastic for a quick run or a social walk with other dogs. The views are beautiful at sunrise or sunset, and it’s a great place to work on recall or enjoy some calm leash time.

Parking: Findon Valley car park off Long Furlong Road.
Note: Watch out for horses — this is an active training area, so keep dogs under control when riders are present.

🌤️ A Few Local Walking Tips

Always carry water and biodegradable poo bags ♻️

Watch out for grazing animals on the Downs

Avoid long grass during tick season (April–October)

Check weather conditions — the Downs can be windy and exposed
